A Bowen treatment session aims to help the body holistically, balancing the body while also addressing areas of tension and strain. It is undeniable that, whether we recognise it or not, our being has multiple life-sustaining systems working all together all at the same time. Every one of these systems will have an influence on the others moment to moment. An imbalance in any one of them will have its effect on all the others.
Bowen Therapy addresses the entire body through restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system. The Bowen moves prompt the shift from the stressed, sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ mode to parasympathetic ‘rest and repair’ dominance. It’s not uncommon for clients to fall into a state of deep relaxation during treatment, many even fall asleep.
The treatment impacts the body in a number of ways. The moves stimulate nerve cell receptors to calm the system, they address the fascia or connective tissue that is continuous throughout the body and provides structural and functional integrity. Certain Bowen moves activate draining of the lymphatic system, stimulating the immune system. The treatment enhances removal of toxins and waste products from the cells to be dealt with by the spleen and liver for elimination, thereby improving the body’s ability to function at a cellular level. Coincidentally, quite a few of the Bowen moves correspond to acupuncture points, which also have a positive influence on internal organs.
With Bowen therapy able to impact the body in so many positive ways, it should not be surprising that the range of problems that can be resolved is quite broad. This makes the Bowen Technique one of the most versatile therapeutic treatments available today. The technique is unique and very effective.
The Bowen Technique is a gentle therapy to receive and we do not manipulate the body. It is therefore suitable and safe for all ages, even babies.
The Bowen Technique is not a miracle cure and responses are individual, though most people will feel an improvement after just one or two sessions. Below are some of the conditions I have had success with.
