Your lungs are part of a complex system, expanding and relaxing thousands of times each day to bring in oxygen and send out carbon dioxide. Lung disease can happen when there are problems in any part of this system whether that is the airways, the air sacs, the blood vessels, the pleura or the chest wall. It is important to acknowledge when we experience a lung problem, to have it checked out by a GP and then have it effectively treated before conditions worsen.
Respiratory disease affects one in five people and is the third biggest cause of death in England (after cancer and cardiovascular disease). Lung cancer, pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the biggest causes of death. Smoking, infections and genes cause most lung problems.
In addition to tobacco smoke other risk factors include air pollution, occupational and domestic chemicals and dusts, allergens and frequent lower respiratory infections during childhood. Chronic respiratory diseases are not curable, however Bowen Therapy can help dilate major air passages and improve shortness of breath, can help control symptoms and increase the quality of life for people with the disease.
Very few people realise that the diaphragm as a structure has fascial (connective tissue continuous throughout the body) connection through the transverse abdominus (one of your stomach muscles) all the way down to your pelvic floor. There is also an extension of the fascia at the top of the diaphragm that extends all the way around the heart. This makes these structures continuous and interrelated.
Poor diaphragmatic function can also lead to a whole host of other issues because of the links the diaphragm has with other structures, these include:
At Better With Bowen we offer assistance to respiratory sufferers by working on all aspects of the breathing mechanism, including the ribs, spine, diaphragm, the connective tissue and other muscles of breathing. This will improve the overall breathing dynamics of that individual, improve the circulation and assist in reducing symptoms.
